We’ve been installing motorized shades since 2005 — roller shades, drapery tracks, honeycomb, roman, wood blinds, tensioned skylight shades and outdoor systems. Design, installation, programming and service are handled by our own team across Vancouver, Whistler, Victoria and Calgary. Earning Black Diamond again in 2026 means your shades are specified and commissioned by people with the deepest Lutron expertise available.
Lutron and Crestron both make motorized shades, and they work together — Lutron shades run natively inside a Crestron system, so lighting, shading and everything else sit on one interface instead of three apps.
Shading is Lutron’s core business, which is why we specify their fabric range: over 800 options, and the depth that comes from a company that’s been doing this since it invented the dimmer. Crestron’s strength is running the whole house, and where a project is on Crestron the shades become part of that system rather than something operating alongside it.

Motorized Roller Shades
Roller shades are the most common motorized option, and for most rooms they’re the right one. A single panel of fabric that rolls up out of sight, in a range that runs from barely-there sheers to full blackout. What changes the result is the fabric, not the mechanism.

Discuss a Shading ProjectBattery-Operated Shades
Battery shades go in after construction, with no wiring to run — which makes them the answer for almost any retrofit. Same control, same integration, same fabrics as wired; the only difference is where the power comes from.
Lutron’s Triathlon series has been the workhorse here for years. The newer Palladiom battery shades are the more design-led option, with a slimmer profile and a smaller bracket. Either way, you’re choosing from the same 800 fabrics and controlling them from the same keypad as everything else in the house.
Between battery changes
Battery technology has moved far enough that a set lasts three to five years — so a retrofit shade needs almost no attention once it’s up. Available across the same premium finishes and styles as wired.
Motorized Drapery Track
Drapery does something roller shades can’t: it softens a room. Fabric hanging in folds absorbs sound, breaks up hard architecture, and — in a heavy blackout weave — gives you some of the most complete darkness available.
Tracks are built to order in pinch pleat or ripple fold, up to 30 feet in a single run, and can be curved to follow a bay or a bowed wall. They run on the same schedules and keypads as your shades and lighting, so a single press can close the drapery, drop the blackout behind it, and bring the lights down.
Roman Shades, Wood Blinds & Honeycomb
Not every window suits a roller shade. Roman shades, wood blinds and honeycomb each do something a roller can’t — softer folds, adjustable slats, or genuine insulation — and all three motorize and run on the same keypad as the rest of the house.

Soft fabric folds that operate at the touch of a button — the look of traditional drapery with none of the handling.
Wood Blinds
Independent tilt and lift, so you can angle the light without losing the view or the privacy.
Honeycomb Shades
A cellular structure that traps air, so they insulate as well as shade. The best option where heat loss matters.
Motorized Tensioned Shades
Skylights and angled glazing are where ordinary shades fail — fabric sags away from the glass and light leaks around the edges. Tensioned shades hold the panel taut and parallel to the window, so it stays flat whatever the slope.
Lutron’s version does it without cable guides, which means fewer light gaps and a clearer view when the shade is up. The frame can be surface-mounted, inside-mounted or recessed into the ceiling, and the fabric can be changed later without taking the frame out.
Outdoor Shades
Outdoor shades turn a patio into a room you can use most of the year. They keep insects, dust and wind out, hold heated or cooled air in, and take the afternoon sun off a west-facing deck.
Fabrics are built for weather rather than interiors, with metal hardware in finishes chosen to match the building rather than stand out from it. On heavily glazed elevations they do measurable work on cooling load — which is why they’ve started appearing in building code rather than just on wish lists.
Commercial Shades
Commercial shading is a different problem from residential. The runs are longer, the glazing is bigger, and the shades usually have to do something measurable — cut cooling load, stop glare on a screen, or meet a requirement in the building code rather than a preference.
We install commercial shading across offices, boardrooms, restaurants, hotels, sales centres and residential developments. Lutron’s commercial platforms — run shading alongside lighting on one system, which matters when a floor has forty shades that need to move together rather than forty people deciding individually.
On heavily glazed buildings, shading does measurable work on cooling load — taking direct sun off the glass before it becomes heat the mechanical system has to remove. On a west elevation in summer that’s a significant load, and it’s cheaper to shade it than to cool it.
It’s worth raising early. Exterior shading in particular is a design decision rather than a retrofit — the mounting, the power and the structural fixing all want to be settled while the elevation is still on paper.

How much do motorized shades cost?
More than people expect and less than they fear, and the honest answer is that it depends on things we’d need to see. Size is the biggest factor — a wide floor-to-ceiling shade needs a different motor from a bathroom window. Fabric matters, and so does whether it’s wired or battery. What we can say is that no two quotes look alike, and we’d rather measure than guess. A walkthrough gets you a real number in a couple of days.
Do motorized shades need wiring?
Not necessarily. If the walls are open, wiring is inexpensive to add and gives more headroom on large or heavy shades. If the house is finished, battery shades need no wiring at all — same fabrics, same control, same integration. Most projects end up with a mix.
How long do the batteries last?
Three to five years between changes. Battery technology has moved far enough that a retrofit shade needs almost no attention once it’s up.
Can motorized shades be retrofitted to an existing home?
Yes, and it’s most of what we do. Battery shades go in after construction with no wiring, so a finished house is no obstacle. Wired shades are possible too, but usually only worth the disruption where a run is large or a drapery track is long.
What’s the difference between sheer, dim-out and blackout?
Sheer filters light and keeps the view, while cutting glare and UV. Dim-out gives privacy but still lets daylight through. Blackout blocks daylight completely — bedrooms, media rooms, anywhere you want full control. Most houses use more than one.
Will they work with my existing smart home?
Almost certainly. We install both Lutron and Crestron shades, and both run natively inside Crestron, Control4 and Savant systems — so they sit on the same keypad and the same schedules as your lighting rather than needing a separate app. Which we’d specify depends on the project.
How noisy are they?
Quiet enough to move mid-conversation. Both Lutron and Crestron have put serious engineering into motor noise, and on a floor-to-ceiling drop you notice the shade moving before you notice the sound.
How long does an installation take?
Six to eight weeks from placing the order to the final walkthrough. Measurement and fabric selection come first, then fabrication — shades are made to your windows rather than pulled off a shelf. Installation itself is quick.
Can I see the fabrics before deciding?
You should. There are over 800 of them and they behave completely differently in real daylight — no screen shows you that. Our Yaletown showroom has the range, and we’ll bring samples to your home so you can judge them in the light they’ll actually hang in.
